Yarrow's Obituary in the Times of London
Years after writing From Slave Ship to Harvard, I discovered this death notice in the Times of London. A common practice at the time was for a newspaper to pick up news that had already appeared in other newspapers. In this case, it had taken months for newspapers from New York to reach England via a sailing ship; hence, the gap between Yarrow's death on January 19, 1823, and this notice in the Times. And of course, the New York newspaper must have gotten the news from some other newspaper in the United States that had carried the original notice.
"A New York paper on the 29th Jan. states, that Yarrow, a moor, died at Georgetown, Columbia, on Sunday last, aged 139!"
The Times of London Saturday March 1st 1823, page 3.
